These pages tell the story of the “tree of music”, the extraordinary spruce growing in the forests of the Fiemme Valley, in the Dolomites, Unesco’s world nature heritage – Italy. This tonewood, unique for its resonant properties, is used to manufacture soundboards and tops for all classical musical instruments.
It is worldwide acknowledged that the famous violinmaker A. Stradivari used this particular spruce to make his fascinating instruments, obtaining the extraordinary sound we can still listen to.
Today, the heart of many famous pianos and grand pianos in the world is a soundboard produced by the Ciresa Company. In its factory located in the Fiemme valley, the firm has been manufacturing soundboards and sound components of highest quality for more than 50 years.
The Ciresa Company was established in 1952 in Tesero (Italy) by Enrico Ciresa (1922-1991), who had acquired a great experience working at the Delmarco & Bozzetta harmonium and piano factories in Tesero and later on at the Schulze-Pollmann piano factory in Bolzano.
In his small workshop, Enrico Ciresa first started producing piano keyboards and shortly after reed harmoniums. These instruments, produced in several models, had an immediate success and appreciation for their manufacture and sound quality. Nowadays the harmonium is appreciated by a limited number of music lovers only, and therefore its production has been stopped since more than 25 years.
In 1978, mainly due to logistic reasons, the production moved from the old workshop in the village to a new modern factory, where it is still located. From the 70s Enrico Ciresa also started the manufacture of church pipe organs and piano soundboards, in order to support the production of the harmoniums that was declining due to the electronic keyboards’ development.
The death of Enrico Ciresa in 1991 marked an important transition in the business: the second generation of the Ciresa family took over the management. The piano soundboards and ribs production became the core-business of the company and the focus was shifted towards the foreign markets, supplying the most famous European and overseas piano factories.
The aim was to make a wider public aware of the musical characteristics of the Fiemme Spruce and of its story. The fame of A. Stradivari, who used this particular tonewood to make his unique violins, increased the appeal of this product: the tree of music.
The long-standing collaboration with Fazioli, the world-renowned Italian piano maker, and the quality reputation of the Ciresa soundboards are a very important business card for the most demanding piano manufacturers.
The Ciresa soundboards, besides their qualitative excellence, are recognizable by the trademark, officially awarded by the Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme in 1991, and the numbered Certificate of Origin.
